Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), Addictions: Recovery & Wellness

A CSAC will provide counseling services to patients with substance abuse addiction problems within the scope of their certification and under the supervision of a licensed substance abuse treatment practitioner (LSATP), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), or other mental health professionals licensed by the Virginia Department of Health Professions.

A CSAC will assess and analyze emotional conditions, explore possible solutions, and work within a treatment plan for mental and emotional adjustment or development. Work may include screening, intake, orientation, the administration of substance abuse assessment instruments, recovery and relapse prevention planning, substance abuse treatment, case management, substance abuse or dependence crisis intervention, client education, referral activities, record keeping, and consultation with other professionals within the scope of their certification and under the appropriate supervision, as specified above.

• Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or in an approved related field required. 
• One year of Behavioral Health/Substance Use Disorder experience required. 
• Certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) by VADHP required. 

• Monitors and manages an assigned caseload.
• Assists clients/patients in identifying self-determined goals and jointly prepares individualized service plans within ASAM criteria.
• Provides substance abuse counseling with individuals and groups.
• Provides Interventions made appropriately during patient crisis, i.e. AMA, depression, crisis issue, etc. in order to maintain the patient in the community for the purpose of working on his/her addiction and keeps clinical staff and supervisor informed.
• Does chart supervision/auditing as assigned.
• Provides case management services; coordinates and links clients to community resources and medical services, interfaces with other service providers and the clients’ support systems.
• Managed care companies are contacted in with appropriate timeframes for case reviews. Verifies insurance coverage and documents benefits.
• Provides crisis intervention and prevention services to individuals and families.
• Assists clients/patients as needed in arranging for appropriate, identified follow up treatment after discharge.
• Discharge summaries for inpatients and outpatients are completed and reviewed with the client before the time of discharge and include all elements per department, State and TJC guidelines.
• Provides assistance in facilitating transportation for discharge purposes, as needed.
• Documents and charts information about client assessment, individualized service plans correspondence, medical records, etc., prepares and submits records as requested.
• Documents any noteworthy behavior of patient during group/activities and treatment in general.
• Breaks down charts for HIM as assigned.
• Monitors and audits clinical and medical records and ensures compliance with regulatory, reimbursement and agency standards; reviews documentation for accuracy; assists with reviewing division policies and procedures.
• Participates in clinical staffing and multi-disciplinary treatment team meetings.
• Serves on committees as assigned; prepares and distributes agendas; attends professional conferences and trainings as assigned.
• Supervises student interns as directed.
• Calculates monthly statistics as assigned.
• Administers BAL’s as assigned.
• Ensures urine drug screens are obtained, and paperwork is completed as assigned.
