Assistant Director, Respiratory Therapy 


The Assistant Director Respiratory, Pulmonary, Sleep & EEG Services assumes responsibility for the day to-day operations of the Respiratory, Pulmonary, Sleep & EEG departments. In conjunction with the Director, develops and coordinates safe respiratory care practice. Also plans, develops, implements the departmental annual budget, process improvement, associate education, accreditation and development of long-range department goals and objectives.


PROBLEM SOLVING: Job requires a high level of problem-solving due to the complexity of the situations encountered.


INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:  Work assignments are generally received in the form of broad goals or areas of responsibility and require considerable judgment regarding the interpretation of policies, development of procedures, and selection of appropriate courses of action.

  • Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care preferred
  • 3 years of Bronchoscopy Procedures and Supervisory experience requierd 
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist by NBRC required
  • Certified Laser Technician required
  • Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the Virginia Department of Health Professions  


  • In conjunction with the Director, plans and administers, both directly and through subordinate supervisory personnel, the effective management and delivery of quality diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care and laboratory programs in accordance with hospital and outside regulatory agency standards.
  • In conjunction with the Director, develops, reviews, evaluates, approves and formalizes department policies and procedure and modifies accordingly.
  • Develops, monitors and implements Process Improvement Program that promotes clinical and operational excellence. Reviews and analyzes internal and external trends and activities and recommends specific corrective action to rectify issues and enhance results. Performs analyses and offers recommendations regarding new programs, initiatives and business opportunities.
  • In conjunction with the Director, develops, secures approval and administers capital and operating budget.
  • Manages the unit's operational assets. Prepares financial and statistical reports and documents departmental activity and results. As directed and approved by the Associate Vice President of Peri-OP and Operational Services, directs the purchase of major capital equipment.
  • Works cooperatively with other VHC departments and vendors to obtain favorable terms and timely acquisition/installation.
  • Develops goals/objectives for the work group to contribute to the achievement of the VHC business strategy.
  • Addressing roadblocks to achieving established goals/objectives.
  • Analyzes trends in patient, physician and staff satisfaction.
  • Implements the appropriate corrective actions to assure that all concerns receive a timely and appropriate response.
  • Manages personnel activities, including but not limited to hiring, firing, counseling, evaluating, promoting and establishing performance criteria for Respiratory, Pulmonary, Sleep & EEG Services team.
  • Maintains continuity of operations within the Respiratory, Pulmonary, Sleep & EEG.
  • Provides leadership in the design, initiation, implementation and evaluation of programs.
  • Recommendations and implements initiatives to improve operations and services, and reduce costs.
  • Identifies trends, opportunities and problem areas which may impact the department.
  • Reviews respiratory care documentation, including patient charges and documentation of respiratory therapeutics to assure compliance with The Joint Commission, Department of Health and professional standards.
  • Oversees the coordination and assignment of patient care duties.
  • Represents the department as a member of standing and ad hoc committees.
  • Maintains current knowledge of clinical and business developments and communicates relevant information to the work group.
  • Participates in the delivery of respiratory care services as needed.
  • Works with the Director to insure educational activities/standards are evaluated and modified when necessary.
