Purpose & Scope:
The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacist position will be staffed within the Emergency and Trauma Departments as an integral member of the Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care teams. The clinical pharmacist is responsible for performing fundamental clinical pharmacy duties to facilitate safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medications in the neonate, pediatric, and adult patient populations. Key areas of clinical practice will include trauma response and emergency medicine management for these patient populations. Duties include assisting with appropriate selection, dosing, administering, and dispensing of medication orders, providing support for medical emergencies (Code Blue, Code Stroke, Code STEMI, Code Sepsis, traumas, conscious sedation, and rapid sequence intubations). The clinical pharmacist will contribute to the education of emergency medicine staff, as well as precepting pharmacy students and residents. The yearly performance evaluation will be based on measurable outcomes related to quality initiatives, cost containment, safety, and optimization.
Education:
Bachelor's or doctorate degree in pharmacy is required.
Experience:
Three years of experience in clinical pharmacology is required.
ASHP PGY1 residency required.
Certification/Licensure:
Licensed as a Pharmacist by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required.
BPS board certification to be obtained within 24 months.
ACLS certification required.
PALS preferred.
ASHP Emergency Medicine Certificate or ASHP Critical Care Certificate is preferred.
